When I took Amber back to the vet for a re-check there was an elderly couple that walked out into the vets waiting room. They had two empty carriers, a woman asked why they were empty and did her babies have to stay in the hospital and for what reason.
The elderly woman began to laugh and said I had two old cats and they were no longer useful, they were old and were not good mousers anymore so we put them both to sleep. Most of us gave strange sad looks, one woman began to cry and I was furious with this couple who had so little regard for life, she continued to laugh and said they were 15 and 16 years old and why keep something that has lost it's usefulness.
Here my precious Snookie is dieing causing me anguish and Amber has been at death's door and Chili Bean died not long ago and she was laughing about killing her cats. My God these people were in their late 70's and it took all I had in me not to tell them off. Some day someone might feel the same way about them if they didn't car about their animals they must not have loved many people.
I may go overboard on spoiling my babies and treating them like humans but I had rather be the way I am instead of a cold hearted creep treating them as objects or dirty old shoes and bags of garbage to be tossed away and cast aside. I went out to my car and had a good cry for those two babies who were surely rejected, neglected and never loved.
There is a story to my childhood that made me strong and caused me to be the kind, gentle, loving, compassionate person that I strive everyday of my life to be, but this board is not for that but if we could tell a little of our own stories we would know what made each other the way we are today. Oh if everyone in this cruel world could just embrace a little bit of mercy it would be a better world and much less painful.
Oh my I just don't seem to be able to keep quiet these days, so many emotions are running wild causing so much pain for me. Sometimes memories are not a good thing. Amber is a lot better now but I still must warn everyone about the carpet cleaners. Also my vet warned me not to give the cats any turkey skin it can kill them.

Geeezzzz, some people....that makes me sick to my stomach, there are so many that really just dont care and in a cruel way. At least they took them to the vet.....that's something. When I hear of animal abuse on the news I have to shut it off and I feel disgust for the people who did that to them. They were'nt put here to be neglected and abused. I was married in my early 20's I divored my husband because he beat my dog once, that was all it took for me...done. I take that very seriously. Turkey skin....good to know.....posion to them like chocolet is to dogs.....and I cant spell worth a darn either...... Pamela

Hi, Ann-
Stories like that make me sad and angry. I just can't imagine the way some people treat their animals. I live in an area where many people see their animals as "employees" rather than members of the family. I get so sad when her people say "Oh Fluffy got eaten by a coyote, so we need a new cat." They say it so matter of factly and with no remorse. Even a friend of mine shook her head when she heard that I was going to pay $3,000 dollars for Shiloh's chemo. She said Shiloh was lucky that she belonged to me, because my friend would have just had her put down. I had to give Shiloh a chance...and if I had to do it all over again, I'd do it all the same. There's no price that I could put on the last 3 months Shiloh and I had together.
That's why I'm very grateful for finding this website...people that feel the same way about their furbabies as I feel...members of the family that deserve to be loved, cuddled, and cared very dearly for.
I'm glad to hear Amber is doing well. She's such a cutie!
Love,
Kathleen

Ooohhhh Ann,
My heart broke reading that!!!!
I'm sorry............but, that (explitive) elderly old woman...........
I can only pray that perhaps her furcats were ill, given their age and all............but, just to hear her say that.......
Perhaps she is an elderly woman who doesn't have all "her marbles, upstairs"......
I can at least hope for that....
God bless you guys.............
Love, Denise xo
p.s. Is Amber doing better, Ann???? I sincerely pray that she is...............
And, "turkey skin"????? I NEVER HEARD OF THAT, WHICH COULD CAUSE HARM TO OUR BABIES!!!!!?????

Hi Denise, The woman seemed like she was in her right mind but who knows she said there was nothing wrong with them they just didn't catch mice anymore and they didn't want to feed them that they were useless. I guess they were lucky that she just didn't dump them off some where but that sure hurts when people are like that.
Amber is getting better by the day and she is eating pretty well now. She has to be on medicine for 2 more weeks and then the Doctor will check her again. I had never heard of the turkey skin being harmful either. I was telling the vet about the huge dinner I was going to prepare for Christmas and all the goodies I would be making. I told him all our furbabies partake of the food too and that's when he told me about the turkey skin. I guess it can cause pancreatis in dogs too. I guess there is a lot to learn about the foods they can and cannot eat.

my ex is a vet, and we dated during her last year of vet school. i learned alot really, and one of them is that there
are definitely two (or more) camps of people in regards to animals. one group considers them to be members of the
family, as pets or children. at the other end is another group who view animals merely as servants to man. the
differences at the vet school evidenced this, with the small animal doctors (companion animals) being very much more
compassionate overall about an animal's role in the world and the large animal (food animals mostly) being somewhat
more hardhearted. not that i am trying to stereotype, but farmers have very different attitudes about animals...
including their dogs and cats, both of which are to service the farm just like everyone else.
i wont deny that what the elderly woman said wasnt cruel, considering the location at which she said it. but in
her mind, what she said was true to her. you have to wonder tho, was trying to hide her grief a bit as well?

Call this weird, but taking away the emotional slander that this couple made about their pets, at least between us (an extended pet kinda loving family), we can smile knowing that their cats lived a good long life, despite their owners. They've gone up to their catbeds in the sky
