Oh my but this has been a terrible day for my husband Clair and I and our fur grand baby. I was keeping little Amber over night because my daughter had to work a double so I thought I would keep her here with me as I often do.

Cinny had been throwing up and the puppy Schnitzel had a couple of accidents so I got out my carpet cleaner today and cleaned the living room floor. My God it claimed it was safe for animals so I didn't think anything of using it.

After a while Amber ran and got on the table my husband went in to tell her it was not nice to get on the table. She went to get down but she fell and I watched in horror as Amber staggered around while walking across the floor. She could not walk straight and laid down after walking a short distance then got up and staggered some more.

We ran to her and picked her up we knew something was wrong but did not know what it was. Amber was fine when she came over. As we were on the run to the vet we kept thinking we would lose another baby.

The vet said the carpet cleaning product can kill even though they claim to be safe. She had walked across the vet floor and licked her feet. He said it could cause internal bleeding, convulsions and a variety of things. Cats should never walk on the carpet when it is still wet and it really should not be used at all.

Amber had some treatment but she is still pretty ill but is resting and thank God no one else got sick from it. We were told to put a little vinegar in with plain water in the carpet cleaner to try to get the dried solution off the carpet. I guess even the dried solution is dangerous. Please please be very careful if you clean your carpets, we had no idea we could have killed our sweet babies. We are so glad we scooped her up and went to the vets.

Dear Ann:

ohmy.gif Oh my...............I AM TERRIBLY SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT AMBER sad.gif .........

Unbelievable!!!!!

You & your husband have really had MUCH MORE THAN YOUR SHARE, my friend!!!!!

I am happy to hear that you went off to the vet's, and that Amber, although still ill, is resting!

***IN THE LINKS, NEWS AND OTHER INFO.,.......PART OF LIGHTNING-STRIKE FORUM, I HAVE PUT DOWN A VERY IMPORTANT PHONE #..........**

IT'S THE "ANIMAL POISON CONTROL CENTER, AND THE # IS: 888-426-4435....

Please, we should all keep this # close at hand.......

After an "ex-vet" told me "if you want to deter Ms. Lucy from chewing on cords, etc..........You CAN USE "RIGHT
GUARD deodorant spray"

Well, I bought some, and the day came that Lucy was really nibbling on all of our cords, so I gave the cords "a good
spray", just like "THIS VET", (sorry, but I use that term extremely lightly) instructed that I do...

He did tell me that "YOU CAN SPRAY HER FACE, JUST MAKE SURE THAT YOU KEEP HER EYES COVERED, and "spray downwards, so it doesn't get into her nose"!!!!
But, I didn't want to do that to our sweet Ms. Lucy; I figured that spraying the cords would be sufficient...

All of a sudden, she started VIOLENTLY VOMITING ALL OVER THE PLACE, AND HER BODY WAS CONTORTING......
She wasn't having a seizure, but I felt for sure that she was going to die.....

Panicking, I did speak with the people at the Animal Poison Control Center..... I WAS PETRIFIED!!!!!
They did tell me that "Right Guard SHOULD NOT BE USED WITH AN ANIMAL", and to let them know should she continue
with vomiting.....

Long story short..........we did end up seeing our vet that day, where Ms. Lucy received some SQ fluids, because she
was terribly dehydrated from vomiting!

Everyone at our present vet's office said, "NEVER, EVER, EVER USE THAT SPRAY!!!!" They were sooooooo SHOCKED THAT ANY VET WOULD'VE GIVEN SUCH TERRIBLE ADVICE.....

(ESPECIALLY WHEN THERE IS A PET SAFE "DETERRENT SPRAY" CALLED "BITTER APPLE") I had never, ever
heard of this "pet safe" deterrent before this Right Guard episode!!! sad.gif

The "APCC-Animal Poison Control Center" really was a life-saver that day!!!! No question there!!!

It cost $50.00, (which, IS OF COURSE, WELL WORTH IT)..... I think that perhaps they are all volunteer, and there are veterinarian's who do give the advice, to the person that you are speaking with on the phone.

And, you are given a "case #", so that your veterinarian can call the APCC, and find out all the necessary information
about the poison, and also what they advised that we do.

The number again is: 888-426-4435
This is especially wonderful for people who have fur-kids, but do not live close to their veterinarian's.....

****** wub.gif Ann...........thank you soooo much for sharing your story about using A CARPET CLEANING PRODUCT, WHICH CAN CAUSE HORRIBLE PROBLEMS TO OUR SWEET FURKIDS.....!!!!!!
WHO KNOWS, SOME POISONS CAN BE LETHAL.............

It is through OUR SHARING...........each and everyone of us, that WE LEARN!!!!! smile.gif

God Bless you!!!

Dear Denise,
I sure am glad that we have this wonderful place to let others know of dangers that we might not know about. I would never do anything to hurt any of my babies or grand babies as I know none of us would.

This was the first, last, and only time I will use carpet products. My sister tried to tell me that baking soda or vinegar would get almost anything up. I should have listened to her as she knows a lot of things about animals. She never had any children and dogs have always been her babies. She told me about the bitter apple years ago.

I am so sorry that the so called vet told you to do that terrible thing to Ms. Lucy. Shoot that would be like us breathing it and that is not healthy. I think some of those vets should be put out of business for causing harm to our little ones.

Thanks for the number to the poison control too. I wrote it down when you posted it before but if someone failed to write it down there it is again.
Love, Ann

Make sure you check any cleaning products you use for Phenol (a major ingredient in Lysol). It is toxic to cats.
Ann H
Thank you so much for letting us know. I did not know that and I do use Lysol. I sure wish someone could make a complete list of things like that. I have tried to look things up but most of the things they warn you about are on plants, antifreeze and things like that. I have always thought I was so careful but I guess I wasn't. I guess I will do more research, to bad the vets don't put out a list on unsafe products.

Thank you!!!!

I've always used LYSOL..................that is.....until I read that PHENOL IS POISON........No more Lysol in this house, thank
you!!!!!!!

I will send an e-mail to the Animal Poison Control Center and see if they have a list of products that are harmful to our
sweet furkids...........
I would think if anyone has one, that they ought to......

Goodnight and God Bless you All......

Love, Denise

I was working on a concise list of things, but I never did finish it. I'll try to get back to it. It is SO important. I didn't know about the Lysol either. Club soda is good to clean pet stains from carpet.

DeeDee:

Thank you for that website........

Great, informative!!!

I'm so happy that a site like that exists!

God Bless!
Love, Denise
Ann H
Thanks Dee Dee, I have bookmarked the site, we all need to know what is harmful to our babies. None of us would do anything to harm them on purpose but sometimes our ignorance hurts them and we must become better informed to keep them safe.

mad.gif Nutra Spray made by Lyesol......The commerical says....gets rid of odors....even the stinky dog. Guess that says it.
J T
Neutra-Air doesn't even list the ingredients on the label (except the aerosol propellants), but since it's made/marketed by Lysol, I've avoided it. Even the MSDS doesn't list them.

Ann, I'm SO thankful that you had a happy ending. By spreading this news, you may have already saved another innocent pet.
