Beth, that's such good news! I'm so glad she's eating okay now and hope things just keep getting better, and more stable, and better...
After reading up more on pancreati*tis myself, for the green smoothie, check with your vet to see if this recipe is okay or not. It may NOT be, considering the info. (see below
*) from Dr. Pitcairn's recommendations, so you might be better off just using a high-quality "green food" supplement, such as possibly Enerex's "Greens RX" powder, or "Missing Link" animal supplement, or some of Kim Sheridan's (of Animals & the Afterlife) nutritional products she's developed for all creatures:
healthforce.com I used various ones, depending on what exactly was going on at any one time, or if something in Nissa's conditions changed. (I'd do research then swing that by our one or two vets to make sure I wasn't contraindicating anything)
If Gidget's already eating regular food and keeping it down, there may be no need to use the baby food, which is something you wouldn't want to use more than you have to, as it's not nutritionally-balanced, being pure protein. But if you do need it, you could start with it plain, adding a bit of purified water if need be (it's kinda dry), but the guidelines are to start adding other balancing ingredients ASAP (if they're accepted okay), such as a small amount of raw egg yolk (organic egg the best), some vitamins (again, your vet would have to work out the dosages of each one chosen, according to weight &/or other 'complicating' factors), possibly a bit of mushed-up cooked whole grains, &/or some steamed veg's...just so it's not just pure protein and to ward off constipating effects from the baby food.
For the Slippery Elm Bark powder mixture, first, go buy yourself some of the powder!

(health food stores usually carry this) Then, boil 1/2 pint purified water. Slowly whisk in 1 tsp. of the powder and keep mixing/whisking until it's dissolved and then slightly thickened - should be almost as thick as raw egg white. Store in fridge for only a few days, e.g. 3-4. Give about 1 tsp. of the mixture (at room temp.) per day [this dose for cats, so depends on how big or small Gidget is], either directly in mouth (via syringe, with breaks for swallowing, natch) or mix with food if they'll accept it that way (it does have a slight flavour). You can use a bit more/day if needed, or split up the one dose in two and give 2x/day instead. If this doesn't stop diarrhea w/i about a day or two, you'd need other measures either too or instead of. If using this for the opposite (constipation), it may also take a couple of days to work. You can also use this mixture for
any mucous membrane irritation, from either end, so it's also wonderful for
sore or irritated throats, gums, etc. (for humans, put a larger amt. of the mixture in tea or other hot beverage, for same applications) It also worked very well for Nissa's
acid reflux and nausea whenever she had that - again, soothes the insides. (for her tiny size of under 6 lbs., I'd only use about 1/4-1/2 tsp. per application) You'll find Slippery Elm added to most natural throat lozenges now. And as I'd said, an hour or so away from other supplements or any drugs you might be using. (better if given before the others, to help protect the stomach lining, too)
A few other great supplements to start using regularly, no matter the condition, are:
1.)digestive enzymes ("Prozyme" is a popular one for animals), and
2.)"Transfer Factor" by 4Life online (the human or animal one called their "Advanced Formula" seemed to fit the bill for pretty much anything, as opposed to some of their animal-only formulas, which some people didn't find as good for one reason or another). Nissa LOVED her little T.F. daily drink! Tastes 'cheesy' to animals. (must be taken with water, away from food):
Transfer Factor distributor. See their main site for more info. -
4Life sitemap, and
3.) probiotics to balance/replenish healthy gut bacteria....esp. important if Gidget's picked up bad bacteria and also great to ward off or alleviate diarrhea. I use an expensive but fabulous brand called "HMF Forte" by Genestra Brands. (used the same one for both Nissa and myself)
For homemade diets for pancreati*tis, I know Dr. Pitcairn says to just use his
basic raw dogfood recipe from his book, but change up a few things, such as omitting veg. oils or butter and other fatty foods that can irritate the pancreas, using Vit.A capsules over codliver oil , using Vit. E for sure (to help prevent pancreatic scarring), emphasizing corn (pref. raw; and to my mind, non-GMO, organic!) and raw, grated cabbage (in the food recipe), and to
*avoid fruits....plus a number of other recommendations, like serving food at room temp., regular use of Vit. C & bioflavonoids, and the like. You might want to pick up his book, "Natural Health for Dogs & Cats", where he gives all info. for these and other suggestions like herbals to try, and homeopathics to try [and how to dose each of these] You have to go back and forth between pages to get ALL the info. straight, so it's a bit too extensive to type all out here. There are also a number of basic natural dogfood recipes in "Food Pets Die For" by Ann N. Martin, some of which would follow Pitcairn's guidelines for pancreati*tis and including some 'treat' type recipes, too. Or do searches online for some other, newer homemade diets for this condition. Unfortunately, the only other ones
I have already are for cats, not dogs, but I know I've seen pancreatic diets online before and there are also usually specific group forums around for those dealing with certain dis-eases/conditions - a wealth of info. & a means to share experiences!
I'm very happy that your newer vet is more up-to-date with things. That alone will help a lot! If she doesn't happen to know specific dosages for vit.'s and supplements, ask if she knows anyone who does. If not, you'll have to do your own research online &/or with the help of any holistic vets who work by phone, or have info. on their websites. (I know I'd listed a link to some of them, somewhere here before). Or use a book like Dr. Pitcairn's. Or Dr. Goldstein's
The Nature of Animal Healing/
Dr. Marty.com. My own library of cat/animal health books grew over the years and I consulted them all as needed, then ran things past Dr. Hamilton and our local integrative/holistic vet to find JUST the right combo. of "bests" to use for Nissa, which often required some juggling due to her different dis-eases.
For specific homeo. remedies to consider, I'll PM that info. to you sometime today or tomorrow. You might even consider as well, the use of the liquid crystal remedy, Topaz, for pancreati*tis, if you can find it.
You're very welcome, Beth, for whatever I can hook you up to that might help your dear girl out. "If only" I was a vet myself! Then you could just book an appt. with me!
Hope everything just keeps looking up!
