Some timely advice from Lynn McKenzie at this holiday season:

Healthy/Healing Holiday Tips for your Animal Companions

Since the holidays are a time of such hustle and bustle, I thought I would offer some useful tips for dealing with our animals (and the energy) over the holidays.

1. Stay grounded and centered yourself to avoid doing mindless things like leaving chocolates, or a candle burning, on the coffee table, forgetting to secure cats in their ‘safe space’ before the revolving door of open house company begins, affording them opportunities cat to escape etc.

2. For the dog (or cat) who likes to eat everything: keep your unattended animal companion away from presents, goodies, decorations, and the Christmas tree. This could save you thousands in vet bills and perhaps even the life of your animal companion.

3. It’s the most stressful time for the year (sung to the music of It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year): this can be a stressful time for everyone, and remember that on top of their own stress, your animal companions also absorb the stress of their people so remember to give them lots of exercise, healthy regular foods, one on one time and good flower essences to help them deal with the season.

4. I’m leavin’ on a Jet Plane: Being left behind, whether at home with a pet sitter or in a kennel, can be very upsetting and depressing for our animal companions. I recommend that you make a conscious effort to tune in with them energetically, on a daily basis, and perhaps even do some distance energy work or ‘grounding exercise’ for them to help them deal with their situation.

5. Forewarned is For-armed: If you do have to leave or make big changes in the routine and lifestyle of your animal companions over the holidays, consider booking a session with an animal communicator to let your animal companions know exactly what to expect and how long to expect it for.

6. Let’s get this party started: Make sure your animal companions have a safe, secure spot to stay during holiday parties. The commotion, new energy, and noise can be very stressful for them. Also beware of the well intentioned house guest that insists on sneaking your animal companions food that might make them sick.

7. Poisonous and Toxic items: An important reminder that the following items are poisonous to animals so take extra care to ensure they don’t get them: anti-freeze, chocolate, acetaminophen and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, prescription or illegal drugs, rodenticides, xylitol , grapes and raisins, onions and garlic, lilies, and macadamia nuts.

I hope you don’t need it, but here is a link to the ASPCA Poison control center ASPCA Poison Control Center. From this link you will also find links to their list of poisonous and toxic plants as well as all sorts of useful information.

Have a safe, happy, animal friendly holiday season!
