great post marcia!!! As I read each poem I got more and more filled up with positive feelings.
I love your ideas about trying to help the people in the apartment fire and trying to help pet owners understand little known hazards.
Does anyone know how ones goes about training an outdoor cat to stay away from the garage or driveway? if I could have known how to train him I would have--I was too soft on him. My s.o. would toss a empty pop can in his direction (for the noise) when he skooted in the garage door to disuade him--but it didn't "stick". I would really like to know how I could have handled this. It may be a moot point because I don't think I will ever own another outdoor cat (I didn't want one in the first place but I took him in and he was used to being outdoors and I couldn't subject my other indoor cat to him). but I would like this on your hazard list--about cats who lounge in the driveway or bolt inside opening garage doors--but I don't know what the "remedy" would be.
loved the poems, marcia--very uplifting!

Thanks Patti for responding. This is, of course, a very good point. I don't know if there is a way or what can be done to protect an outdoor cat in this instance. Is this something you think you might be up to researching or woud it just be too much for you right now? Maybe someone else would volunteer to research this.

If enough of you are serious about wanting to help me with these ideas, should we just keep posting in this thread or should you email me or what? Any suggestions? I would like to put it all together like I said so we can all distribute copies of it.

Hi Marcia--I found this list for cats---I imagine some things on this list could apply to puppies too.
Cat Hazards
BabyHannahsMom
Thanks again, Patti. Of course, I want this list to include any and all types of "animals," including cats, birds, ferrets, hampsters, etc. Since it's going to be difficult to have it really concise, maybe the thing to do is to have one list for each type, and give, say the one for cats, to the person who gets a cat, the one for a dog, to someone who gets a dog, etc. I don't know. I sure would appreciate suggestions from everyone.

Maybe I should move this post somewhere else, since I made such a long post here to start with, with the poems and all??
gingerspal
right marcia--sorry I have kind of goofed up your poem thread with the hazard list!! maybe you can repost and ask the moderator to delete beneath the poems and make a new thread about the lists--(the idea of separate lists makes sense) the beautiful poems are one thread and the discussion about the hazard lists should be a separate one..yathink?

This post has been split off the Poems for Comfort thread....

Thanks MD, Patti, and DeeDee. I worked on this a little today, and will check out the sites you posted. (Patti, you didn't mess it up. I should have posted in different threads in the first place.

When I get the project a little more narrowed down, I'll give ya'll an update and see what you think and what suggestions you have. This is for all of us.

Please keep sending stuff and if you happen to think of anything that needs to especially be included, let me know.

Thanks!

I have a number which I want everyone to have (if you already don't have it).....

It's to the Animal Poison Control Center..... #888-426-4435.

Their website is " http://www.apcc.aspca.org "

Our ex-veterinarian told me to use "Right Guard deodorant spray" to use on any cords to deter my sweet Lucy. Sometimes she likes to gnaw on cords...

He even went so far as to say, "cover her eyes, and you can spray downwards to her nose and mouth".

Lucy has been ill for awhile with an upper respiratory infection/asthma/chronic diarrhea, and just got finished with
a two week supply of Clavamox.
She went in yesterday to the "NEW VET" (Thank you God), for a re-check, and was found to be doing well!

Today, she was "nibbling on our computer cords", so I went ahead and gave them a spray........

Not even 2 minutes later, she was violently vomiting (approximately 5 times), and "acting out of sorts".
Immediately I called our vet, and they gave me the animal poison control center number.

I spoke with them, and they told me to watch out for more vomiting - take food & water away.
She vomited again (twice), within 1/2 hour......

Thank you to Karen wub.gif for speaking with me, and helping to calm me down!!
Obviously, I was (and still am) a nervous wreck.

While she and I were talking, Lucy vomited twice again...............

So, I called back the poison control center, and they said we needed to go straight to the vet's office.

I got an immediate appointment, and drove the 25 minute drive to get there.

"Right Guard" is obviously toxic to animals, and never to be used.!!!!!!!!

Lucy's fever is high, and her lungs are raspy sounding.
The vet believe this is "secondary" to her problem with the right guard......

Because she vomited so much, the vet gave her 150ml sub-Q, and also an injection of antibiotic.
We are to see our regular vet in the morning....
The vet is concerned about the fever, and needless to say, BEN AND I ARE VERY, VERY CONCERNED...

I was more than a bit angry on the way home, but, extremely scared for our girl. But, I did place a call to the "ex-vet", and told his secretary the story.

I said, "Do you guys and Dr. ____________ know about a spray called, "BITTER APPLE"??"
"Oh, sure we do.............We sell it here as a matter of fact, and people use it to deter their pets from cords, etc...."

I said, "Well, I'd like you to tell Dr. ______________ that HE SHOULDN'T BE ADVISING PEOPLE TO USE "RIGHT GUARD" AS A
DETERRENT, IF THERE IS A PRODUCT ON THE MARKET THAT IS NOT TOXIC TO ANIMALS!!!!!!!"

I'm sure you all know where I would like to put that can of Right Guard??????

I don't want a "call back" from our EX-VET, but I would like to complain/put in a report, etc...., about his recommendation,
that "one should use that toxic deodorant spray as a deterrent".......

I am soooooooooooooooooooo sorry that I poisoned my Lucy!!!!! I feel totally responsible!!! I am sorry that she is so ill, and not doing well!!!!!

Yes, I did what the ex-vet told me to do, but, I should've known better!!!! Why would I use a product that I wouldn't even use under my armpits???!!!!!

Just want everyone to know, should their vets ever be STUPID ENOUGH TO SUGGEST SUCH A PRODUCT!!!!

Thank you for listening!!

Love, Denise

Hi Everyone:

I'd like to ask for everyone's prayers, in regard to my sweet Lucy Girl..... wub.gif

The vet called back......
She's extremely concerned about Lucy's temperature.

Her blood sugars came back wicked high.
A pancreatitis test didn't come out normal....

She's very tired, and not acting herself..
Mr. Yoster is on top of the bed, while Ms. Lucy is on the cold floor.....

We're going back to the vet at 11:30am tomorrow; Lucy is not to eat anything after midnight.

But, after the injection today of antibiotics, and the sub-Q fluids....... she doesn't seem interested in anything....
On occasion, she'll come out and lap up some water......but, she's under the bed right now.

It could be diabetes............but, then again, it could have to do with her "Prednilisone"; (though, we've gotten her dose
down to the lowest possible).... So, the vet said, "probable diabetes".....

She doesn't know "what else" could be going on in her lungs.....
She's concerned about some big infection somewhere.....

And, I just ask that maybe if everyone say a little something, send some "healing prayers", for our Girl.......

She and Mr. Yoster were adopted 3/6/2004 as "adult kitties"......... six & seven years old, respectively....

It's true that I had Ernestine for 2 months shy of 20 years old....and, I loved her with all of my heart and soul.....

But, I love Lucy soooooooooo much, and I would be broken-hearted if anything ever happened to her!!!

I know you can all relate!!!

Thank you!

Love, Denise
chuchelo
You have my prayers!!!!
Muffins
Thank you very much Chuchelo's mom, for your much needed prayers!!!

And, thank you Marcia, for our very wonderful and helpful conversation this evening!!!!

I'll probably be up the whole night; I want to be awake should Lucy need me......

Even our Mr. Yoster is acting a "little weird"........I think "he knows something's up".... Inasmuch as Lucy might seem to occasionally "dislike" Mr. Yo, I know that they actually have a very, very strong bond with one another...... wub.gif

Thank you everyone!!!

Love, Denise & Ben

Oh gosh, Denise -- you know I'll be thinking of you and saying my prayers for you and little Lucy. Call me if you need me, please! I'll be home tomorrow until about 12:00 your time, which means I may not get to talk to you until tomorrow night, since you have the vet appointment. I'm praying for Lucy to be much better in the morning and for the news to be good news!
Bless you. Take care.
Muffins
THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU FOR YOUR VERY SPECIAL PRAYERS FOR OUR GIRL...... wub.gif

We got to go to the vet's at 9:30am this morning.

Lucy's blood sugar was normal!!!!! biggrin.gif

My brain is all "mushy" from the whole day!!!!
I can't even think straight.

For the whole day, Lucy has been "hiding" (healing), under our bed..... I am very sure that she is so sore
from all the poking and prodding!!!!!

She came out for about 2 minutes to have a little bit of food, and use her box. That put a smile on our faces for sure......

The vet "thinks" that she was so "ultra-stressed out" from the happenings of yesterday, with the
Right Guard (POISON) spray, that her whole system got thrown off.

Maybe "there isn't a real explanation".... It could be from her "very, very low-doses of Prednilisone", as well.
And, as of today, she will not be on that any longer.....
Steroids can cause a whole host of problems in all systems.....

Should she start with her "asthmatic coughing" again, then we will have to resume..... But, we'll deal with that,
if it happens again.... Hopefully NOT!!!

Her temperature was still a little up, but considered to be "low-grade".
Our vet did a urine test on Lucy, just to see if that could be a reason for her temperature.

For right now, Lucy is stable, and I pray to God and St. Francis that she will stay that way, and quickly
be on the mend.

It goes to show you just how very, very precious our babies are.......... Ben and I love Lucy and Mr. Yoster
with all of our hearts.....
Can't imagine our lives without either of them....

We're all just going to "chill out for tonight", and hope that Lucy comes out from under our bed much, much
more frequently....

Ben & I thank everyone for your well wishes....Really!! Prayers "do make a difference"....

And, I will keep everyone informed on how Lucy is doing. I PRAY THAT THINGS ARE ONLY GOING TO IMPROVE
FROM HERE ON!!!

Ben & I will be REAL ECSTATIC WHEN THINGS ARE BACK TO "NORMAL"!!!

Again, Karen, thank you very, very much for our "open phone-line conversations"....

To my very special friend, Alice............."YOU KNOW!!!"

And, to you Marcia, for your thoughts, prayers and our talks as well.

Support! That is where it is at, and I found it all here............ On Lightning Strike!!! biggrin.gif
This "wonderful place" is definitely a MIRACLE!!!!

God Bless you All!!

Love, Denise
chuchelo
What excellent news!! Thanks be to God! I hope things continue to go well with the healing.

Thank you, Chuchelo's Mom:

Our precious babies are just sooooo very special!!!

God Bless you!!!

It's wonderful to hear the good news! I wondered about ya'll all day.
Muffins
Just wanted everyone to know.....................

The GOOD NEWS IS "Lucy came out from under the bed a couple of times today"...!!!! wub.gif

She had a little to eat, walked around the living room a bit....
Then, back under the bed.....

Mr. Yoster was ecstatic rolleyes.gif ...... He even jumped off the perch to join in the feast!!!! biggrin.gif

Ben & I have been sick with worry over our little girl, and Mr. Yoster has been so lonely, too!

But, I think, slowly but surely she is coming around.....

The stress of that "STUPID RIGHT GUARD" has really taken a toll on poor Lucy!!!!!

You know, all of God's wonderous creatures....................
wub.gif HOW VERY MUCH WE LOVE THEM AND THEY LOVE US!!!!!

Ben and I don't have "any human children", and we are soooooo happy with the life that God gave us, with
our precious fur-babies......All of our lives..... wub.gif

I was looking at the website, from the shelter that we adopted Mr. Yoster and Lucy from on 3/6/2004.
Mr. Yoster's brother has been adopted, as has their other housemate, Mariah....

But, Lucy's sister, Orbie, is still there....... sad.gif
How very sad!!!!
Unfortunately, Orbie "never liked" Mr. Yoster - and, vice-versa!!!!

There are sooooooooooooo many babies that need adoption!!!!

BUT, I really wanted to come back and say, "THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR
THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS FOR OUR BEAUTIFUL MS. LUCY'S RECOVERY".....

They have all been appreciated MUCH MORE THAN YOU ALL WILL EVER KNOW!!!! biggrin.gif

Love, Denise & Ben (also, Ms. Lucy & Mr. Yoster) xo
