The company said it manufacturers for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies. Its three U.S. and one Canadian factory produce more than 1 billion containers of wet pet food a year. The recall covers pet food made at company plants in Emporia, Kan., and Pennsauken, N.J., Henderson

Rajah ate that kind of food and part of his diagnosis was kidney failure. The enlarged heart we could have treated, but with both being wrong the vet said that the treatments would make each condition worse. I am going to be so pissed off if that's what happened. Just an enlarged heart we could have treated. I can't believe this is happening!

Hi Everyone:

I got the following information just a bit ago from a feline diabetes site that I belong to - I wanted to post it here for all of you.

QUOTE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dayton, OH (March 16, 2007) – In response to the recent Menu Foods, Inc. nationwide recall of wet pet foods, P&G Pet Care has announced a voluntary recall in the United States and Canada on specific 3 oz., 5.5 oz., 6 oz. and 13.2 oz. canned and 3 oz. and 5.3 oz. foil pouch “wet” cat and dog food products manufactured by Menu Foods Inc. Emporia, Kansas plant with the code dates of 6339 through 7073 followed by the plant code 4197. This voluntary recall is part of a larger product recall by Menu Foods Inc., a contract manufacturer that makes a small portion of canned and foil pouch ‘wet’ cat foods for Iams and Eukanuba as well as other non-P&G brands. There have been a small number of reported cases of cats from the US (none in Canada) becoming sick and developing signs of kidney failure. The signs of kidney failure include loss of appet*ite, vomiting, and lethargy. P&G Pet Care has received no case reports involving dogs.

Visit your food manufacturer's website -

www.purina.com (Mighty Dog, but NOT Fancy Feast)

Glad you posted all this, Denise.....also glad I never used ANY of those foil-pouch catfoods (garbage!) to begin with! (they're second in line to most dry foods for being bad for animals)I just heard on tonight's news that a woman in Calgary had 3 sick cats who ate some of the recalled foods......one, her oldest, died, one's in the clinic on I.V. as yet, and the other is recuperating at home - ALL got kidney failure suddenly a few days after ingesting this 'food'. Yet another story about how unsafe this manufactured food can be. And though the dry food (kibble) was okay (THIS time!), everyone should also know that you can make your OWN dry food at home, from high-quality ingredients, if you don't want to go the raw-food route.

I wanted to say thank you for finding and posting this. I heard about more recalls again this morning and wanted to check on the brands recalled. I knew just were to come. This was wonderful of you. Thank all the gods we don't use any of this.

Thanks again
Furkidlets' Mom
I received these Cdn. press releases this morning through one of my health e-letter subscriptions. It's an update on the recalls.
Menu Foods recalls
It lists cat and dog foods separately, under 2 links, plus additional info.

This is so sad. Im keeping an eye out on what my Dinah eats, I thought she was getting thinner because shes getting older. At then I thought it was the food...we started getting a fancy hard kitty food, and shes just picky. She wants her Science Diet!

The sad thing is, the infected plant is in my own state! I hope this gets cleared up soon. I feel so bad for the families.

For those interested in switching brands, don't forget to check out the links at the bottom of the one Denise posted, particularly this one:

I also noticed a link (in the same place) to a story on drugs for animals that is probably useful to read, too.

This has spread beyond Menu Foods. Happy Tails, which I feed my dogs, is now on it. Does anyone have access to an updated overall list?

Peace & Love to you all,

It's spread from just Menu Foods into Purina, but it's only in

ALPO canned - bad wheat gluten from China is the cause!

I feed my cats and dogs, 1 dog now sad.gif , Pro Plan but I'm really considering going to all homemade food really soon!

Just saw these 2 other info sites/forums on this whole debacle. One includes quite a comprehensive list on what companies use Menu Foods for some or all of their products, whether they have their OWN quality testing in place or not, and whether they've checked and verified the safety of their products. This list also includes some of the better and best companies, so do your due diligence, please, and read it ALL!
list of companies
Petfinder forum (this last one has a huge discussion on the recalls, so you can also read each separate page to see all aspects discussed, including even more links than what I've provided here.

Even IF you've already switched foods from those included in the recall (so far!), you should STILL read through these links to get as informed as possible about what you're feeding to your kidlets! There was also info on some ferret food, separate from this melamine issue, but having to do with a different recall from salmonella, which I noticed in the Petfinder forum, so it's not just our cats' and dogs' foods that bear watching!!

Hi Everyone:

I was just checking out an emergency vet hospital in our area, and they had a listing for the American Animal Hospital Association. They had a section specifically for the huge pet food recall with LOTS of listings.

Has everyone seen the food-recall updates from April 13th? There were just a few more. http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=recall_faq#-1

And

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) was informed today, April 16, 2007, that Natural Balance Pet Foods has received consumer complaints regarding the Venison & Brown Rice Dry Dog Food, and Venison & Green Pea Dry Cat Foods. The company does not know the cause of the problems, but has received reports of animals vomiting and experiencing kidney problems. Although the company is stating that the problems seem to be focused on one particular lot, as a precautionary measure, the company is pulling all dates of Venison & Brown Rice Dry Dog Food and Venison & Green Pea Dry Cat Food from the shelves.

The company is advising consumers to discontinue feeding all Venison and Brown Rice Dry Dog Food, and Venison and Green Pea Dry Cat Food.

The FDA is working closely with Natural Balance and is actively investigating this problem. There is no indication at this time whether this is related to the ongoing pet food recalls. For more information, please see: http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/
