Full Version: How Soon Is Too Soon?

Hi everybody, this is my first post here. I lost my precious cat Sunny recently.

I was wondering how soon other people here had obtained new pets after the passing of their existing companions? I am starting to think a new cat might heal the hurt, but it feels too soon at the moment - I feel disloyal to my Sunny to even be thinking about it, it feels too much like I'd be saying she is replaceable, when in fact she was a unique cat who I feel will always live on in my memory as 'the' cat, if you know what I mean.

To those who took on new pets soon after the passing of their old ones - how did it feel? Did it help heal the hurt or did it just feel wrong/too soon?

Thanks. I'll post more about Sunny soon.

hi,

you can see how others have felt over the years by doing a search, not all posts discuss this but several do:

Simba's Daddy
I got my new cat just two days after. I do think he has helped me greatly in my grief and probably would have had a hard time being alone. I still think of "Simba 1" everyday and his memory will always live inside me.

When you feel that you are ready (only you will know) then you should do it. Remember, Sunny taught you how to love and be loved by a cat and it is an honor to him opening your home to a fellow cat in need of a great home.

I got Tilo about a month after Yoda's passing. It has helped quite a bit for me and my husband, but even more for our other elderly cat who was left all alone.

Here is my slant..most of the I just copied from a recent post I did in another part of the forum

I lost my baby Chase on the 10 of November too. She was very young. It was way too early, way before her time. I am in a quandry right now over the same kind of decision. I too have considered another ferret but fear it may be "too soon". I slept on the notion last night and upon awaking my mind was made up. Here is why......

In the world of domestic creatures great and diverse in variety, one common thread emerges that connects all of them. US!!! We are the watchers of these creatures. If we do not go to places like shelters in particular, how does such a creature survive? In short (and I usually never am as the fine folks in the forum probably know) it is us as humans who domesticated these creatures and has been thrust upon us to care for them. Further to that...and specifically...we, the people here are compelled by some strange unknown force to continue to bring new pets into our lives as God claims our babies back one by one. It is our "lot". We will always be subjected to doubt like this because we are the kind of folks that put these magnificent creatures before ourselves.

Oh by the way..It's not to soon
