Hi. I am worried about my sick 5 year old pomeranian-corgi mix Toby. He is currently in the ICU with acute renal failure due to Leptospirosis. Right now we are just waiting to see if he responds to treatment. Has anyone had any experience with ARF? Please, if you could send good thoughts his way it would really help! Toby and I moved to a new town 3 weeks ago -- far away from anyone we know, so I would be lost without my buddy!

Sending positive energy your way and for Toby....I don't have specific experience, but my cat Cleo did respond to hydration for failing kidneys. I did get almost a yr longer with him after that...

I am very sorry to hear that you lost Cleo! I'm sure he was very loved. Thanks for the good thoughts on Toby's behalf-- Just an update -- I got to visit him for 10 mins today (after not being allowed too see him for 2 days). He perked right up when I came in, and they said that's the most active they've seen him. (I kind of felt like saying, well of course...) I got to leave him with his blanket and toy from home, and he layed right down on the blanket when I put it in his cage. As for his health he is responding well to the new diuretic and has stopped vomiting, and he is eating willingly - so they are going to try to take him off the anti-nausea meds. Here's hoping that he improves even more tonight!

I just read your story, and I'm so encouraged to hear of the improvement. Keep us posted!

Good news to hear Toby is improving! He must have been so happy to see you and smell a blanket that was familiar...

Take each additional day as a gift. I hope you get much more time with him.

It helped me when Cleo was first diagnosed to figure out how much I would try and what was too extraordinary (ie. a kidney transplant on an 17 yr old cat was out, hydration was in). I then made my list or critieria for quality of life things I wanted him to still be able to do (jump up on the window, eat fav foods, pee in litter boxes, etc.) I got almost 1 yr longer with him. Then he went downhill in like 1 day....everything went.

I am grateful to have had Cleo in my life for 18 yrs.
