How have those of you that have had cats with kidney issues dealt with the incontinence? I lost by baby girl a week ago and she has left behind her brother who is 17 and starting to show signs of aging. At the end of her disease, Ella would very politley wait at the sliding door in the morning, go out to the garage and stay in her bed until we brought her in at night. Then she would sleep on the couch on some incontinent pads and woolies.
But prior to her feeling so ill, she slept upstairs in our bedroom. I had my carpets cleaned just the other day, after she had passed and they showed me with one of those nasty black lights that Ella had been peeing for quite a long time upstairs in our bedroom on the floor. I thought it had only started in the last 2 months but it looks as if it was going on for longer.
Because I quite expect PT do have the same issue hopefully not for somtime, what do you do? I had put down incontinence pads all over the floor for Ella in the end but she wasn't using those ...she was just voiding where she lay. Do you crate them? Do you keep them in one room? Do you say what the hell and replace the carpets later? What do you do?

there is a product available now called UrineGone. unlike coverup sprays, it contains enzymes that eat the urea in urine, rendering it odorless. it is not cheap, about $10 for a spray bottle (add another $10 for the blacklight). i use it in my cat's litterbox area, the kid's bathroom, wherever necessary. it is available at Target and on the internet. http://www.urinegone.com/

another option is to confine the pet. my ex-wife, who is a vet, kept a "pee-er" in a large crate cage when the family wasnt playing with the animal (a cat). they also make pet diapers, but i feel that isnt the way to go personally. you could also just say the heck with it and replace carpeting as necessary, many people do that as well. owning a pet isnt easy, especially at the beginning and nearing the end.

I LOST MY 151/2 YR OLD BICHON IN JULY AND FOR THE PAST YEAR HAD BEEN DEALING WITH INCONTINENCE. I HAD PUPPY PADS ALL OVER THE PLACE. I BOUGHT DIAPERS BUT COULD NOT PUT THEM ON HIM. I JUST TRIED TO CLEAN UP AND WILL GET NEW CARPET NOW THAT HE IS GONE. I DO NOT MISS CLEANING UP THE MESS BUT I WOULD DO IT OVER FOR HIM AS IAMSURE YOU ALL WOULD TOO.

I have been using "Pet-tastic", which is an enzymatic cleaner, and works great! Also I have heard good things about "nature's miracle". Maybe also confining your cat to rooms without carpet when you can't watch him? Good luck!
