its been one week ago today that i lost fred. i still feel acute emotinal pain every time i think of him, but its starting to fade just a tiny bit. my boyfriend and i were given the gift of a new baby basset hound, who will be here april 11, and we are scared to death. i cannot lose another baby, and this is my deepest fear. we installed a fence around the pool, and plan to be hyper vigilant, but we also know that a puppy needs to be a puppy. i feel guilty about having a new furkid so soon, but a part of me feels healed and comforted by the fact. he will never replace fred, but he is a baby who needs love too. please help with any suggestions.

Hi MommytoFred,

Fred knows that you are NOT trying to replace him. I'm sure Fred is feeling honored that you will be giving love to someone else who needs you. Your love for Fred will always shine through to others who are lucky enough to receive your love.

It is a tribute to Fred and to your love for him that you want another dog. This new dog will in no way replace Fred or diminish your love for him. Love is infinite.
