Hi Sara,
I think you're absolutely doing the right thing. I think babybear led you to call about giving a loving home to a kitty in need, since he knows what a wonderful home you can provide! And I'm sure he knows that you really need another kitty there with you physically, even though he's still with you in spirit!
I wish I could give you advice on what they're looking for in a home check, but probably they just want to make sure that it is relatively clean (showing that you're responsible) and that there is adequate space (like, you're not hoarding 50 other cats in a one-room apartment). I'm sure you'll do just fine!
Best of luck with your new furbaby! Please keep us updated!

Wow... they're doing a house check??? Thats just strikes me as being odd. But like Eliza said, they probably just want to make sure that you're responsible and clean. I think what you're doing is wonderful! The fact that you are even considering to do this and open your home and heart again just speaks words for your capacity and willingness to love. You'll do fine! BabyBear will be there to help you out!
Best of Luck!
Cynthia

As long as you 100% realise that the new cat will not replace babybear then your heart will give you the best advice.
Good luck,
Not wanting to put the dampers on anything, but is someone going to be there with you?

of course no furbaby will ever replace him and i do understand this because the cat that im looking at to rescue is a tabby like barney, which was something that i thought would be hard and to begin with i kept thinking he looks like barney, but the more i see his picture the more i see the difference. im hoping that when i met him i will know if it is right!!! i have thought about this and if tomorrow they say that i havent passed the home check then its just not ment to be. i will miss babybear (barney) for the rest of my life and that special bond we had, i also am aware that the relationship with another cat will not be the same as they are all different. And thats whats making me want to rescue another cat because i loved getting to know babybear i really enjoyed the fact that he was older he already had his personality moody and grumpy!!!!!!! and he loved a good cuddle, If i do get a new furbaby and he or she doesnt want to cuddle then that is fine by me!! i just want to care and love another there are so many older cats in this world that are struggling to find homes as everybody wants a cute little kitten!!!!!! i just cant sit here knowing that i have the capacity to take care of one that just wants to be warm and loved that is all i want to do... i do understand your concerns and i have thought about this very hard, the more i think the more i know that this is my purpose in life is to care for animals since having babybear, I am even looking in to changing my job and training to do some sort of work with animals. Im taking a lesson from my babybear he would have done what made him happy and i know that he would want me to do what made me happy!!!! this hole of emptyness in my heart will always be there until i see my babybear at rainbow bridge no other can ever replace it, but surely in my life time i can love a furbabies unconditionaly and give he or she the best last years of their life!!!!!!!

Dear Sara,
The deep love you have for Babybear is very obvious, and it sounds like you've given the prospect of loving another kitty a lot of good thought. You're absolutely right that there are many, many adult kitties looking for loving homes, and I think it's wonderful that you are willing to open your heart to another furbaby, no matter what their personality may be. I'm sure Babybear is very proud of you!
And I think it's a very nice idea to look into a job devoted to the care of animals. That could make you very happy. That way, not only did Babybear give you years of love and devotion, but he will continue to help you and other kitties like him until you are reunited with all of your furbabies at the Rainbow Bridge!
Please continue to let us know how its going.
Hugs,
Eliza

Just to keep you updated she didnt come last night she cancelled so she is coming tonight. She kepted talking to me like she was so positive that i will pass and that i can go a get a new furbaby at the weekend, but i said to her please dont talk like that till you have been and done the home check. So its tonight in about 7 hours from now i will know if i can rescue on from that centre. If not then my vet has informed me that they have a post board with lots of adult cats looking for homes so i will pop in on my way home from work. I will let you know later if i have passed!!!!

the more time i spend with him the more i see how different he is to babybear, when we brought him home i was really worried that he looked to much like him. but if i had a black cat and rescued a black cat i would be in the same postion. he is so different to babybear that im really enjoying getting to know him today, he is such a softy where as babybear would rip your hand off if he had the chance and ben meows and barney couldnt so they are so different. he is worrying in at the moment he keeps meowing to make sure im still here i hope tomorrow he will be ok when i have to go to work

Dear Sara,
What a beautiful boy Ben is! And he sounds like he has a lovely personality to go with his handsome face! (He looks like a combination of my Winnie and Tigger!) Thanks so much for sharing his picture with us!!
You are such a loving person to open your heart to this deserving little soul! Ben is so lucky to have found such a comfortable home and such a caring mom! I imagine it won't take him too long to settle in. And adult kitties seem to have a fairly easy time with keeping themselves amused while we have to be away. But it may help him to leave the radio on tomorrow while you're at work and make sure he has a couple of toys he likes to keep him occupied, just in case.
I'm so thrilled for you both!

I left him this morning lying in the hall way purring, im so worried about him i hope he is ok on his own today i have only been away from him for 3 hours and im already panicing. I have decided against going home to see him in my lunch break because by the time i get there i will have to leave again and i think it might upset him more if i go in and then come straight back out again. Im so worried about him already!!!!!!!

Dear Sara,
Ben is a doll. Way to go!!! I've watched you through this whole process since you lost Babybear and I've gotta say, you're a brave girl. Taking on a new kid is a big step, especially when you are still grieving. It's great. It's life to go on and love again isn't it!!!!! You're an inspiration. Ben is a lucky cat to be in your home. Hope all is going well for you my friend.

Thanks for your kind words luna, just to keep you all updated ben is doing great, he has settled in so well its like he has always been there, he is so loving i didnt think that i would be able to get a furbaby that would be so soft and gentle all he wants is loving. He is more drawn towards my partner at the moment which is fine because my partner is starting to relise what me a babybear had so its nice for him to experience it and to know that he understands what sort of relationship we had. Ben got a new bed yesterday and i just couldnt get him out of it so i had to push him along the floor in it to get him to the room that we were sitting in. He just doesnt care what you do to him just as long as you are loving him. Im so lucky to have him, i was really scared to begin with because i just have all these feelings that i just wasnt sure. But to have him at home and spending time with him has been a joy. Im still in pain from losing babybear but ben is a distraction for a few minutes a day and he is making me understand that in time it will get better. I just hope i can get rid of these thoughts that im going to lose ben soon to, just me being a protective mummy!!!!! im just going to enjoying studing him getting to know all his likes and dislikes and feeling his body and his soft fur, and rubbing that great big nose!!!!
