I came home to find my queen cat and her kittens very playful in the garage. I sat with them and played for about 10 minutes when I realized one of the kittens was missing. I began to look around and picked up a small cooler that had fallen down from a pile of junk we had. The little kitten must have crawled inside it and when it fell, it fell on its top and trapped it. He died from suffocation. It was horrible. I was hysterical, I think I still am. I can't stop crying and all I can imagine is its fight to get out and no one helping it. How long was he trapped? Was I home earlier when it happened? Could I have saved him? He looked so gross and miserable. It was horrifying and I just can't get the image out of my head. I am so sad, so distraught. I am so sorry I let him down. He was such a sweet little guy and what happened to him was horrendous. No animal should ever meet a death like the one that befell him. Has anyone ever had an unexpected experience like this? I can only relate it to finding out that an animal was killed through animal cruelty. And this happened in my own home. I am just numb with grief. Can anyone help me or guide me through this pain?
Sorrowfully,
T.

I haven't been in your situation, but my heart goes out to you. When we lost Meow, I found a couple of sites that helped:

http://www.aplb.org - click on the link for Chatrooms: Pet Loss

http://www.petloss.com - scroll all the way down to An Improved & Safer Chat Room - several of the people I chatted with have been in similar situations if not exactly the same and could offer some comfort

HI T,

I was digging in the avery and when i turned around one of my birds had drowned in the new water tray i had put down for them.

I know its sad and very hard, human nature leaves us punishing ourselves for things we just have no control over.

this will leave you more vigilant and therefore maybe diverting a worse tragedy.

I dont mean that in that it was your fault what i mean is these things happen for a reason and we are left to wonder what the reason could possibly be.

T, I'm so sorry!!!

I read on another grief site where a woman had turned on her clothes dryer, of course not realizing that her kitty was in there....

In cases like these, please just remember that you didn't intend any harm. You weren't being cruel. It was just a horrible accident. The kitten is at peace now and doesn't wish for you to beat yourself up.

Try and be gentle with yourself. Maybe doing some compassionate thing in the kitten's honor would help---like donating to an animal charity, or just doing some special kind deed with him/her in mind.

God bless,

Kathy
